But despite being less than perfect, both films make for a fun time of piratical fantasy. We host your files on our cloud storage solution for 7 days. Phillip Friend plays the zorro-esque lead, but the script isn't about him, and the character suffers for it. Bucaneer's Girl, often sold with Against All Flags as part of a double-feature, centers around Yvonne DeCarlo (who would go on to play Lily Munster), and delivers the requisite ship battles and daring-do, but with three musical numbers designed to show off DeCarlo's talents as a singer, actress, and all around beauty. Anthony Quinn and Maureen O'Hara are fun to watch, and Errol, though a bit heavier and slower, still delivers the goods. It also doesn't have a classic Eric Korngold score, but Eric Salter does his best. The whole production is clearly trying to cash in on the notion of Errol as a pirate once again, and lacks the polish of the Michael Kurtiz pictures, but like I said, its hard to top perfection. Getting past the fact that you can't beat The Sea Hawk and Captain Blood, Against All Flags is a solid Errol Flynn picture that gives you more of the same, in color. Don't let the cheesy costumes keep you from watching - the scale is impressive, and the action pretty darned amazing. Its nowhere near as serious as The Sea Hawk or Captain Blood, but it's worth seeing, and delivers a Robin Hood-esque adventure in glorious (or dare I say "Fabulous") Technicolor.

This movie above all his others proves that he came from the circus.

The action scenes are filled with pratfalls and humor, but its the stunt work that will have you marveling at what Lancaster and Cravat could physically do - that's really Burt doing those flips and leaps and swinging around like Tarzan. In fact, it's filled with juvenile hijinks (one chase scene through a city with a paddle boat may have inspired a similar scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark, only with wicker baskets used instead). This is a cheesy pirate movie with an impressive budget, where Burt Lancaster and his buddy Nick Cravat star as swashbuckling pirates, and for better and worse, don't take their roles seriously. Front-heavy and watered down, but still sailing. Its a step down and starts off slow, but it has plenty of swords and cannons and Hornblower-esque twists.

Lewis Hayward does a good-enough job of reinventing the character, and the second half of the movie is definitely worth the price of admission. That's what I did until I looked it all up, and it works. Still, if you go in assuming that its a direct sequel, you can imagine that Arabella died between movies, and that Blood gave up his seat and went back to sea. There's a slight continuity bump that isn't explained un-Fortunately (forgive me, I couldn't resist) Blood is simply a pirate again with no mention of Olivia De Haviland's character Arabella, or his position as Governor of Port Royal (likely because the second novel took place between Blood's escape from slavery and before Arabella returned from England to be kidnapped by Basil Rathbone's Levasseur).

Obviously a step down without Flynn in the title role, but this film DOES deliver entertaining, swashbuckling pirate action with enough swordplay and ship battling to justify your time if you like that sort of thing (it's still based on Sabatini, who, like Dumas, knew how to write action-adventures). Troubles will soon be over! Sing as you row, Strike for the shores of Dover! Over the sea, The score from Eric Korngold is also a masterpiece, inspiring the likes of James Horner and John Williams. The final showdown between Thorpe and Wolfingham is a genuine film classic, and few film swordfights can match it without adding sci-fi. And Flynn himself rocks as Captain Thorpe, whose strange relationship with the Queen Elisabeth I (played to perfection by Flora Robson) really sells this movie. The writing is superb from the very first scene it was co-written by Casablanca's Howard Koch, and the direction too Michael Curtiz was a major inspiration for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg's early films. The best sea-faring swashbuckler ever made and perhaps the best Errol Flynn movie ever made as well - certainly one of my favorites.
